Everything was going wrong in the first period for the Screaming Squirrels on Wednesday. Down 3-1 to the Cobras after 15 minutes of play, the mood on the bench was none too pleasant and a second loss seemed probable.
But the Squirrels came storming out in the second period. Wade Marks scored, assisted by crisp passing from Jared Genser and Don Marks, and later Chris Long flipped in a rebound to tie the game.
Despite a couple of mental mistakes that the Cobras failed to capitalize on, the Squirrels kept up the momentum in the third period and held the Cobras to just 2 shots. A puck deflected in off of Sergio Balatan’s skate, and about a minute later Don Marks hammered home a slap shot from the point. A late bench penalty put the Squirrels a man down with less than two minutes to go, but Jon Magi and Greg Wenograd got around the defense, and Magi buried a short-handed goal to seal the 6-3 victory with less than a minute remaining.
Ben Sumner scored the first period goal for the Squirrels with a shot from the right circle. Balatan added two assists in the game, and the Squirrels outshot the Cobras, 25-22. The Squirrels next play the Americans at Cabin John on Sunday at 10:15 p.m.
