Squirrels Finish Regular Season in Second Place
The Screaming Squirrels needed to win Wednesday to keep any hope of capturing the top seed going into the playoffs, but the Jesters escaped with a victory over Silver Spring. The game was no waste of time, however, as the 5 Holes took a 4-3 lead into the first half before the Squirrels came alive in the second and outscored the 5 Holes 4-1. The Squirrels also killed off a crucial 4-on-2 power play late in the game for a minute and 30 seconds. Mark Tessar scored three goals for the Squirrels and led the team in scoring for the season with 17 goals and 18 assists.
The Squirrels won the game despite multiple scorekeeping screw-ups by former commissioner and ice referee Marcus Currie. He simply couldn’t keep the score straight on the console.
The Squirrels will play the High Rollerz on Wednesday, Aug. 3 at 8:30 p.m. in the first round of the playoffs.
