Doug Winters. Screaming Squirrel.
In an early season move, the Screaming Squirrels traded longtime defenseman Doug Winters to Pittsburgh for future considerations.
Winters played with the Squirrels for 13 fall/winter and spring/summer seasons – more than 6 years – exclusively on defense. In 175 games, he had 12 goals and 65 assists for 77 points. He had a goal and two assists in his second to last game with the team, which didn’t include a sure goal the referee washed out due to a premature whistle (the ref admitted it was a mistake).
Winters also skated in 21 Squirrels playoff games and won three championships, while scoring 3 goals and 7 assists.
A short, lanky defenseman who looked barely old enough to drive, Winters used his speed and determination to disrupt opponents’ scoring opportunities, while stepping up offensively when opportunity called.
