The 4th-seeded Screaming Squirrels stormed into the playoffs Saturday with a thrashing of the 5th-seeded Mastodons, 8-1. The Mastodons had beaten the Squirrels twice in the regular season and lost once, but the playoff game was no contest.
Even without defensemen Tony Richelsen and Don Marks, the Squirrels shut down the Mastodons’ DJ Hayes, the league’s top scorer, and put up eight even without top goal scorer Marc Irby.
The game was tighter than the final score would have suggested. Jon Danziger put the Squirrels up 1-0 at 5:22 of the first period. The second goal wasn’t scored until the first shift of the second period when Neil Shah shot home a pass from Danziger. Shortly after, a misplay led to a Mastodons goal. The Squirrels scored three more in the second – including two on breakaways by Arie Stock – and the Squirrels took a 5-1 lead into the third.
In the third, Brent Machado scored his second on a power play, Ben Sumner scored from a Machado pass on a 4-on-4, and Chi Pham scored the final one. The game was also chippy.
The Squirrels advance to the second round which will be played Thursday.
