The Squirrels finally beat the lowly Brewins on Wednesday, having lost the previous two against them. This time, the Squirrels held on and pulled away in the end for a 4-2 win.
The Squirrels went up 1-0 in the first period when Bob Valdes stole the puck and skated in on a breakaway, roofing it. Ari Stock scored a few minutes later. The Brewins pulled within one shortly after that.
After a scoreless second period, the Squirrels got an insurance goal halfway through the third period, as Valdes struck again. Then the Brewins stole a puck in the zone and cut the Squirrels lead.
With two minutes remaining and trailing 3-2, the Brewins took a penalty, giving the Squirrels a power play down the stretch. The Squirrels just needed to run out the clock, but the Brewins took another penalty, giving the Squirrels a 5-on-3. Vivek Pinto redirected Joe Ponzetti’s pass from the point into the net for a 4-2 Squirrels lead with just 13 seconds remaining. The Brewins even pulled their goalie after a late icing by the Squirrels, and Pinto tried to score from the faceoff dot.
