The Screaming Squirrels and Wheaton Caps had quite a game Saturday, with the Squirrels ending up on top, 5-3.
The Squirrels scored twice in the first period on goals by Rob Myers and Vivek Pinto. The penalties started to add up, however, and the Wheaton Caps scored on the power play and tied it up five minutes later.
Things got ugly at 13:22 of the second period. After a delay and several players getting kicked out, the Squirrels ended up with a 5-on-3 power play, only to give up a goal and trail 3-2.
The Squirrels wore down the Wheaton Caps in the third. They scored a goal that didn’t count, as one ref called it good while the other claimed to have blown the whistle before it went in. But the Squirrels kept the momentum as Tony Richelsen scored twice to give the Squirrels a 4-3 lead down the stretch. Bob Valdes sealed the game with an empty-net goal with a minute left.
