Mastodons 5, Squirrels 4 (SO)

The Squirrels couldn’t hold onto a late goal-goal lead Sunday, falling in a shootout to their rival, the Mastodons, 5-4.

The Squirrels even held the lead for the majority of the game, jumping out to a 2-0 lead as Jon Danziger scored twice on the first shift, before Tony Richelsen put the Squirrels up 3-0 at 6:47.

The Mastodons cut the lead to 3-1 to end the first period, then added another in the second.

There was also an odd sequence of penalties in this game, including coincidental misconducts where both players thought were minors, so they left the box together before the refs finally realized what had happened. The Squirrels also took two minors at once to give the Mastodons a 5-on-3, before one of their players took a double minor.

Danziger scored on the power play with 9 minutes to go in the game, putting the Squirrels up 4-2. But the Mastodons scored twice in the final five minutes, then twice in the shootout.

The Mastodons put up 42 shots on the Squirrels, who only had 22. The Squirrels used sub goalie Bryan Pega, who made several great saves throughout the game.
