The game was far more competitive than the final score, but in the end it was the Squirrels 7, Mastodons 0 in a game that appeared to get out of hand in the second period with penalties.
Dave Chung and ‘Good Ben’ Avera scored in the first period. In the second, a dirty play on a faceoff led to a retaliation penalty on the Squirrels, which then led to two more frustration penalties, but the the Squirrels killed the stacked 3-on-5. Then the Squirrels had to kill a double minor, but Brent Machado score a short-handed goal. The game could have easily turned ugly as the chippiness continued, but better heads prevailed.
Vivek Pinto had two goals, Tero Moberg scored on the power play in the third period, and Ben Sumner had a mid-stick deflection goal to give the Squirrels the 7-0 lead.
Steve Borsh subbed in net for the Squirrels.
