The Squirrels had a bye in the first round of the playoffs but had their work cut out for them against the Mastodons on Thursday, winning 5-4 but not without a struggle.
Mario Constantinou scored twice in the first period, but the Mastodons tied it up in the second period. Mike Bartock got the Squirrels the lead back and then with two seconds remaining in the second, Brent Machado scored a short-handed goal to give the Squirrels a 4-2 lead.
Tim Turk scored on a breakaway to give the Squirrels a 5-2 lead, but three penalties down the stretch gave the Mastodons hope, and two quick goals made the score 5-4.
With a two-man advantage in the last 36 seconds, the Mastodons pulled their goalie, making it a 6-on-3, but Machado’s penalty-killing preserved the victory.
The Squirrels will face 2intheBox in the championship game on Wednesday.
