Squirrels captain Ben Sumner was a late scratch, missing his first game in six seasons. The lack of leadership led to a lackluster start, as the Hockey Donkeys took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
Brent Machado got the scoring started for the Squirrels after a scrappy fight for the puck in front of the net. Dave Chung, Tim Turk and Vivek Pinto followed, making it four straight goals for the Squirrels to take a lead.
The Hockey Donkeys fought back to tie the game up early in the third period, but Ben Avara scored off a pass from Mario Constantinou to give the Squirrels the lead for good. Turk added a security goal with a floppy one-timer off a pass from Chung to make it a 6-4 win.
