With only eight skaters on Thursday, the Screaming Squirrels took a couple of multi-goal leads and held on to upset The Whalers, who had a much deeper bench and a much better record.
The Squirrels jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three goals in three minutes in the first period, before surrendering two in the final minute. Tony Richelsen scored on a breakaway with a backhanded shot, only moments after he was stopped on a breakaway with a forehand that normally works. Then Marc Irby scored twice, once on the power play.
Rob Myers tallied in the second period to give the Squirrels a 4-2 lead.
With a period to play, the Squirrels had tired legs, and the Whalers scored quickly to start the third period. Irby got the Squirrels the two-goal lead back only minutes later. Though the Whalers scored shortly after that, the Squirrels held on, even killing off penalties, to secure the 5-4 win.
The game was delayed as the rink crew replaced broken glass along the boards.
