The Screaming Squirrels finally beat the Mastodons, holding on for a 4-2 victory and their fifth win in a row.
The Squirrels started out strong, cycling and getting great chances, but the league’s leading goal scorer, DJ Hayes, got the Mastodons on the board first. Vivek Pinto tied it up for the Squirrels but Hayes scored again to give the Mastodons a 2-1 lead.
They held that lead for much of the second period before Jon Danziger scored on a wrap-around, following a 3-on-1 break.
Marc Irby gave the Squirrels the lead. Down a goal and the clock winding down, the Mastodons put out their best players, only to take a too-many-men penalty. The Squirrels still had to hold back a rush, though, as their pulled goalie made it five skaters on five. But after a defensive-end draw, they took another penalty, giving the Squirrels a 5-on-3 with less than a minute to play. Irby scored, and the Squirrels held on for the win.
