The Squirrels played their worst game of the season Saturday, taking an early lead before getting demolished by Meltdown, 9-3.
The Squirrels got the scoring started as Ben Sumner’s tap-in goal and Brent Machado’s deflection only 17 seconds later made it appear the Squirrels would have an easy night. Then Meltdown got a goal, and another in the closing minute of the first period as the teams skated to a 2-2 tie after one.
Meltdown scored five straight in the second period. The Squirrels didn’t get another goal until the third, when Neil Shah’s blind pass to Machado, and Machado’s blind shot, made for a highlight-reel goal. But Meltdown scored two power play goals after that (three total), and the Squirrels couldn’t recover.
