Squirrels 2, Whalers 1 (SO)

The Squirrels finally scored a goal Sunday, and got their first win of the season in a 2-1 shootout victory against The Whalers.

Midway through the second period, Ben Sumner blocked a shot and lobbed a pass for a streaking Tero Moberg. The pass had too much mustard on it so the goalie came out to play it. But Moberg stood his ground and forced a turnover, then dumped the puck into a gaping net to give the Squirrels a 1-0 lead.

The Squirrels held onto that lead and outplayed The Whalers for much of the rest of the game, killed some penalties, hit some posts, but couldn’t get an insurance goal. That ultimately cost them as The Whalers finally got a puck in the net with about three minutes remaining. The Squirrels attacked in the last couple of minutes but the game went into a shootout.

After giving up the first goal, Craig Beatty stopped the next three Whalers as Tony Richelsen scored in the first round and Don Marks in the fourth.

The Squirrels are now 1-1, with 1 goal on the season, and 2 against.
