The Squirrels played a nail-biter against 2intheBox on Wednesday, locking up first place in the division with a 3-2 victory that felt like a playoff game.
The teams played scoreless for well more than half the game before 2intheBox finally got one through. But a few minutes later, Don Marks ricocheted a shot in on the power play, and the teams were tied at 1 going into the third period.
Then the Squirrels started taking penalties, including a too many men minor which left them at 5-on-3 for about a minute. After killing that off, however, Geoff Grek – who had just finished serving his minor – broke free and scored a short-handed goal to put the Squirrels up, 2-1. But 2intheBox scored just as another 5-on-3 ended, tying the game but ending the odd-man-advantages.
Shortly after, Ben Avara roofed a shot from the crease to put the Squirrels ahead 3-2, leading to a tense final eight-plus minutes, including a last-second collision in front of the Squirrels’ net that ruffled some feathers.
