Roller: Squirrels Beat District 5

The Screaming Squirrels came out swinging Wednesday, dominating play but missing several slam-dunks to run the score up beyond the 4-1 final. Ed Owen scored twice and Rob Myers and Jeff Ford each scored in the win. The Squirrels did slow down a bit in the second period but managed to hold on for the win.

Roller: Squirrels Dominate, Barely Win

The Squirrels came out dominating in their second game of the season Wednesday, but couldn’t get one past High Rollerz goaltender Justin Weston. Then a breakaway goal by longtime Rough Rider Brandon Ogden put the Squirrels in a 1-0 hole.

But the offensive-zone possession continued as Steven Heger and Mark Tessar put together a passing show to set up Ben Sumner and Juan Canchasto on virtually the same play. About four minutes apart, Sumner and Canchasto each stood on the left side of the crease and banged home centering passes to give the Squirrels the lead.

The High Rollerz got a power play early in the second period and converted with only four seconds remaining, which tied the score at two. But Brian Icick and Rob Myers each scored to give the Squirrels a 4-2 lead, before the Squirrels ended the game killing a four-minute penalty.

Normally forwards, Eric Smith and Rob Myers each played defense, along with Heger and Don Marks. The Squirrels put up 37 shots and Stu Miller made some great saves down the stretch to preserve the Squirrels’ lead.

Roller: Squirrels Fall to Jesters

Despite the final score, the Screaming Squirrels, with five new players, look to be a solid team this season as they showed quite a bit of potential in Wednesday’s 7-3 loss. Ultimately, hockey hound Drake Deming made too many great saves for the Jesters as he was tested often. The Squirrels did manage to outscore the Jesters in the second period, including a goal in the final second.

Don Marks scored on the power play in the second period for the Squirrels, and Mark Tessar netted the final two.

Former Foes Join Squirrels Roller Team

Longtime members of the Squirrels roller team remember the Hurricanes. In 2003, the Squirrels faced them in a best-of-3 championship match, split 1-1, but couldn’t play game three because Hurricane Isabel tore through the area. In 2005, the Hurricanes were a dominant team, but lost in the semifinals which paved the way for a Squirrels championship. After that, the Hurricanes were promoted to the B division, and the Squirrels haven’t seen them since.

The Hurricanes were set to drop back down to the C division this season, but after several members couldn’t return, they had to break up. Which left Eddie Owen, Steve Heger Jr. and Nathan Leber needing a new team. So they’ll be putting on the yellow jerseys and skating alongside their former foes.

Here is the 2011 Squirrels roller roster:

  • Ben Sumner
  • Jeff Ford
  • Stu Miller (goalie)
  • Juan Canchasto
  • Chi Pham
  • Mark Tessar
  • Steve Heger
  • Don Marks
  • Rob Myers
  • Brian Iciek
  • Eric Smith
  • Nathan Leber
  • Ed Owen
  • Wes Gassert
  • Bob Sewell (backup goaltender)

Roller Team Adds Three Players

The Screaming Squirrels inline team will have several familiar faces returning, but also some new ones. Wes Gassert, brother of former Squirrel ice and roller goon Kyle, will be joining the squad, as will Brian Iciek and Eric Smith, all of whom come from our Rockville connections.

Returning are the regulars Ben Sumner, Don Marks, Juan Canchasto, Jeff Ford, Mark Tessar, Chi Pham, Rob Myers, and Stu Miller in net.

The Bronze league won’t be easy though, as familiar teams return, including the Hurricanes, who haven’t played at this level for five years. Also returning are The 5 Holes, the Real C Team, Whale, Team Mylec, Silver Spring, High Rollers, and District 5, with the Jesters joining the league.

Games begin April 25.
