Ice: Squirrels Looking Better

In the first game of the season, the Squirrels struggled against Pucks Deep, a team that had trouble standing on two skates. Nearly two months later, the Squirrels jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first period, then scored the seventh late in the third. The Squirrels also had a full bench for the first time and didn’t suck wind between each shift as they have recently.

Despite having only nine skaters, the Squirrels managed a 3-1 lead midway through the second period, but then surrendered three straight and lost to Strange Brew, 4-3, on Tuesday.

Ice: Squirrels Battle Back for Tie

Scurvy only had three subs, and the Squirrels had three full lines of forwards and two lines of defense. Yet the Squirrels found themselves in a 3-1 hole in the third period. Fortunately, goals by Tim Carter and Ben Sumner tied the game, and the Squirrels escaped with a 3-3 tie.

Tony Richelsen had a second-period goal for the Squirrels.

Still bitter after their 8-0 loss in the championship game to the Squirrels, the Piranhas cried their way to victory Saturday, never missing an opportunity to be seen throwing temper tantrums on their own bench at their own players, or threatening to beat up Squirrels players because one of them got his glove hit with a stick while trying to cover the puck in the crease.

The Piranhas barely held on for a 5-4 win, with much thanks to great play by goaltender Joe Messina. Though the shots on goal says 42-31 Piranhas, the Squirrels didn’t exactly trust the scorekeeper, who had earphones on during the game and prematurely hit the horn, amongst other things. In all likelihood, the shots were 42-31 Squirrels.

The Squirrels had trouble scoring in recent games, but that ended against the Nordiques Sunday. At the same time, having three subs for the majority of the game took the wind out of the Squirrels, and they surrendered eight, plus an empty-netter, giving the Nordiques their first victory of the season.

Rob Myers and David Steckel each had three goals, while Tim Carter added one.
