Squirrels 5, Nordiques 1

Before the game, the Squirrels knew that the best team to play against after a long break off the ice was the last-place Nordiques. And it showed, because despite Thursday’s 5-1 win, the two teams skating together looked like lousy Bronze 3 teams instead of a match-up of one of the top teams in Bronze 2 against one with the worst record.

Rob Myers scored twice, including a beautiful post-ringing slap-shot, while Tony Richelsen, Tero Moberg, and Jon Danziger had the others. In net, Nabil Allaoua made 21 saves, including some in the third period while the game was still in reach for the Nordiques.

Squirrels in First

It wasn’t a dominant performance, but the Squirrels played well enough for a 3-2 win Wednesday against Heineken Light, with Eric Coulson in net. Don Marks, Brent Machado and Tony Richelsen scored for the Squirrels. The win put the Squirrels in first place in the Bronze 2 division heading into the winter break (at least, pending the outcome of the Bullets game, but they were moved up from another division).

Squirrels Can’t Hold Lead, Settle for Tie

Desi Richelsen, Bob Valdes, Tero Moberg and Rob Myers in the new uniform.

The Squirrels were up 2-0 against D.C. Fire going into a rare five-minute power play, but they gave up a short-handed goal with five seconds remaining in the second, and couldn’t convert on several more power plays in the third. Late in the third, they gave up the tying goal just seconds into a penalty kill and the teams skated to a 2-2 tie.

Squirrels 7, Brewins 5

New Jersey Night Ruined, But Squirrels Still Win

It’s not often the Squirrels get new jerseys, and it’s even more rare that they don’t get to use them on the night that they get them. Unfortunately for the Squirrels, they were playing the Brewins, a team that also has black jerseys with yellow trim.

Many of the Squirrels, however, did wear their new custom-designed socks.

Weird moment in the game: Tom Fischer had a shorthanded breakaway in the second period. The Brewins goalie didn’t move. He was in his stance, but he stood there like a statue. Fischer was confused, even as he shot the puck and scored. The goalie still didn’t move. Was there a whistle he didn’t hear? Maybe a penalty? Were they still playing? The goal counted, and even as he skated away, the goaltender stayed in his stance. Eventually, he snapped out of it, but it was indeed the weirdest thing the Squirrels have ever seen in a game.

Tony Richelsen had three goals, Fischer had two, with the others being scored by Brent Machado and Mark Tessar.
