Laughing Skulls 2, Squirrels 1

The Squirrels couldn’t make up for a much shorter bench Sunday, falling to a very determined and rough Laughing Skulls team, 2-1. Bob Valdes scored the only goal for the Squirrels in the first period to put them ahead, but the Squirrels couldn’t generate any more offense, despite several power plays. The Skulls scored on the power play in the first and scored the go-ahead goal early in the third.

The Squirrels dropped to 1-3 on the year, and are in a 4-way tie for last place.

Squirrels 6, Highlanders 2

The Squirrels won their first game of the season Sunday, beating their old foe the Highlanders, 6-2. Though the score was lopsided, the Highlanders spent a significant amount of time in the Squirrels’ zone, but the Squirrels defense and goaltending shut them down.

Mark Tessar scored several goals, including what can only be described as the best looking goal in Screaming Squirrels history. Tessar netted his first goal on a slap shot from the right circle, one on a breakaway, one during a scrum in the crease, and one more that even had the refs in awe. On that one, he came in from the left side on a mini-brekaway, was tripped to the ice, went sliding through the crease and still managed to knock the puck past the goalie. The refs confirmed that it would have been a penalty shot if it didn’t go in.

The Highlanders found themselves very frustrated during this game, having lost to an 0-2 team that was moved up from Bronze 2.

In their first game in the Bronze 1 division in more than a year, the Screaming Squirrels faced a fresh-faced old foe, Blades of Steel, who not only had many new players but also had 17 skaters on the bench.

The Squirrels hung with them, though, at least for two periods, leading 2-1 when BoS scored with less than a second remaining in the second period. Not too long into the third, the Squirrels than gave BoS another gift, going down 3-2, which proved to be the Squirrels’ undoing.

The Squirrels scored twice in the second period, once off of a turnover and a deflected shot by Rob Myers and Ben Sumner, and again on Brent Machado’s breakaway, where he went five-hole on Adam Hart.
