In the most bizarre finish of the season, the Screaming Squirrels survived in a shootout to beat the High Rollerz, 5-4, though there was plenty of opportunity to close out the game in regulation.
Up by a goal in the last minute of the game, the High Rollerz had their goalie pulled. Matt Ekenci had the puck with an empty net in front of him. The whistle blew.
The refs somehow called Don Marks for an interference penalty well behind the play, after a High Rollerz player backed into him and fell in the Squirrels crease. Of course, the High Rollerz scored on the ensuring power play.
But the Squirrels re-took the lead 11 seconds later.
And then the High Rollerz tied the game again ten seconds after that. No more goals were scored in the final 17 seconds, and the teams went to a shootout.
Sean Pollack scored and Stu Miller kept all three attempts out of the net and the Squirrels skated to victory.
