Squirrels 6, Heineken Light 3

The Screaming Squirrels got back to winning Wednesday with a 6-3 win against Heineken Light. Brent Machado, Jon Danziger and Mark Tessar each scored. Goaltender Ryan Griffiths made some great saves, especially in the third period when the Squirrels became ‘tired, sloppy and lazy.”

Squirrels 10, Heineken Light 1

The Squirrels returned to their winning ways Sunday, but it wasn’t without controversy. With the score 5-0, the opposing goaltender suddenly challenged the idea that the Squirrels’ sub goalie, Adam Hart, was ineligible to play at our level. This is despite the fact that one of his full-time teams is in Bronze 2.

The game was delayed ten minutes. Even the Heineken Light teammates were frustrated with the goalie who made the complaint.

To further complicate matters, the commissioner on duty said that he believed the goalie was ineligible, but allowed the game to continue. Heineken Light received a delay of game penalty for the failed challenge, but the commissioner reiterated after the game that he believed the Squirrels would have to forfeit.

While the 10-1 score went through, no official word has come back yet. Regardless, it’s a clear case that the Squirrels used a valid sub goaltender.

Future Squirrel Nicholas Sean Richelsen was born Jan. 11. Father Tony missed the game because he forgot what time it was.

In one of the oddest games of the season, the Squirrels came away with an 8-5 victory despite having only three men on the bench. The five goals was the most they’ve given up all season, but the eight was also a tie for the most they’ve scored.

Up 2-0 in the first, the Squirrels then surrendered three straight, but several fortunate bounces – along with some incredible passes – helped the Squirrels score four of the next five in the second period.

Heineken Light cut the Squirrels’ lead to one early in the second period, but Jon Danziger’s two goals (three total, plus two assists), padded the lead with more than ten minutes remaining, and the Squirrels held on.

The Squirrels remain in second place behind Blades of Steel.
