Nicholas Richelsen cheers on the Squirrels.

Playing their second to last game of the season, the Screaming Squirrels faced the Renegades on Tuesday, going down 2-0 before scoring 6 straight for a 6-3 win.

Paul Kobernick scored the first two goals for the Squirrels, who scored five total in the second period on shots by Mark Tessar, Charles Wolstein, Bob Valdes and Tom Fischer.

Nabil Allaoua made 42 saves in net, including a series of flamboyant glove-saves in the final period to secure the victory.

The Squirrels next play Blades of Steel on Wednesday, March 27, a game that could determine who finishes in first place for the season going into the playoffs.

Squirrels 3, Renegades 2

Defenseman Charles Wolstein played goalie for the first time in his life, making 13 saves, including several in the third period, to help the Squirrels to a 3-2 victory against the Renegades on Tuesday. Tom Fischer scored twice for the Squirrels in the first period, and Jon Danziger  scored the game winner only 3:45 into the game. There would be no more scoring for the Squirrels after that, but they held on down the stretch.

Squirrels Fall in Opener

The Squirrels won the last two games against the Renegades, including a nail-biter in the playoffs, but in the first game of the 2012-13 winter season, the Renegades squeaked by the Squirrels, 1-0, behind solid effort in net by backup goaltender Jason Karbling. The Squirrels, too, used a back-up goaltender – one they played against in the playoffs last year from the Laughing Skulls.

Ice: Squirrels Survive, Advance to Finals

Tricia and Desi Richelsen welcomed Kendall Nicole Richelsen to the world the morning of the game. Desi still played.

The Screaming Squirrels advanced to their second consecutive championship game Tuesday with a 4-3 victory against the fourth-seeded Renegades in a shootout.

The Squirrels took a 3-1 lead after two periods behind Tom Fischer’s hattrick (two on the power play), but a late two-man advantage gave the Renegades a fighting chance before they tied the game up with 15 seconds remaining.

The teams skated to a scoreless overtime before the shootout, when Tony Richelsen and Mark Tessar scored, and Nabil Allaoua made four saves to seal the win.

The Squirrels will play on Thursday at 9:20 on Resor against the Piranhas, who beat Fat Daddy in overtime, 4-3. This is the second consecutive season the teams will face each other for the championship.

Ice: Squirrels Finish First

The Squirrels played virtually the entire first period without a goaltender Sunday, giving up three empty netters but scoring four before Nabil Allaoua showed up and pitched a shut out the rest of the game for an 8-3 win. Tom Fischer’s hattrick secured his team points lead for the regular season. Meanwhile, the win also secured first place going into the playoffs as the Piranhas lost their final game.
